On April 15, 2017, April the giraffe gave birth to her calf named Tajiri. I remember this because I was sitting at the kitchen table with my granddaughter Emily and my grandson Zachary speaking with them about the giraffe. Emily asked her brother if he knew what sounds a giraffe makes – dogs bark, cats meow, birds chirp – but what sounds does a giraffe make? Zakk didn’t know the answer and I didn’t know the answer either, and then Emily asked “I wonder if the experts know”?
At that time Emily was six years old. Her question has remained with me, and I was impressed that my little girl understood the concept of “experts”, but as I continued to think about this, I began to think about the things both she and Zakk are learning in school from the “experts”.
In another conversation, this one with my grandson, about G-d creating everything, including humans, in just six days about six thousand years ago, Zakk said “Oh no, Papa, that’s not right, what about the ape-people?” He was alluding to evolution and millions of years, of course. I asked him where he is learning these things – “In a book about dinosaurs, Papa.”
The experts tell us that in the beginning… BANG. Other experts tell us that life began spontaneously and accidentally billions of years ago in a liquid chemical mixture (I can imagine a pond-like hole in the ground containing the chemical mixture) that happened to have all the right ingredients and then suddenly … LIFE … what life this was I do not know – but I can imagine something like a single-celled amoeba – and then over a few million years, this first life-thing became something different – a fish-thing that managed to hoist itself (on fin-like feet?) out of the chemical mixture, breath air, and survive on dry ground. Wow! What a story! This must be how life happened because the experts tell us so! I recall another expert, Dr. Jason Lisle, telling the attendees of a biblical creation seminar that if life began according to such experts, then the humble cabbage is our distant cousin – yes, it’s humorous – but wouldn’t that be true if life is simply the result of random beneficial mutations that happen occasionally over millions of years?
The people at Merriam-Webster (the word experts) tell us that one definition of the word science is this: “knowledge or a system of knowledge covering general truths or the operation of general laws especially as obtained and tested through scientific method”. Think about this – this definition of science can’t apply to evolution because the operation of its “general laws” cannot be obtained or tested through scientific method (observation and experiment). And who says they are “general laws” or “general truths” anyway? The experts of course!
It seems that secular scientists believe only what they can observe and measure and test. How then can they believe their own ideas of how life began? According to their own ideas, no person could have been there at the beginning they imagine because, according to their ideas, people had not yet evolved – only a single-celled amoeba like thing or a fish-thing that could breath air and survive on land was there (so the experts say) – so how then can they believe their own ideas? The answer, of course, is found in the bible: “Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a ‘fool’ so that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in G-d’s sight. As it is written: ‘He catches the wise in their craftiness’, and again, ‘The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.'” (1 Corinthians 3:18-19 NIV).
I am not a scientist; I am a man of G-d. I believe G-d, and He has told us this: “In the beginning G-d created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1 NIV). If you continue to read the first chapter of Genesis you will find that G-d created and made everything in six days – this includes plants, trees, the sun and moon and stars, sea creatures both great and small, all birds, animals and insects of every kind, and also man and woman. G-d created everything in six days!
Who do you believe? The One who was there in the beginning or the word of the experts?
